Scan the packed stadium at tonight's Reitz-Mater Dei football game and you'll see lots of fresh-faced kittens, meowing support in falsetto tones while deeper throats create the familiar roar.

Among the adorable on Reitz's side are the little Cross sisters ¡ª Brooke and Madison. If past games are any indication, they'll probably arrive with paw prints on their faces, painted fingernails and blue ribbons in their hair. "We brought them when they were babies," said Jennifer Cross, their mother. The girls have become a bit more football savvy since those days. Sitting several sections north during a recent game was little Elise Butrum, wearing "Future Panther" overalls. Barely 2 years old, this is already her second season in the stands. She cheers, waves a little pompon and can say "Reitz." The daughter of David and Leeann Butrum, Elise learns the ropes from older siblings ¡ª 4-year-old Will and 6-year-old Grace. "Seeing the Panthers win," answered Grace, staring her questioner in the eye. Clad in a small cheerleader outfit, she spoke in a tone that made her sound three times older.

Of course, child fans aren't tunnel-visioned on the game at all times. Some bring toys and the social aspect is just as riveting, if not more so.
