THE A-League is spreading its wings into esports, with each club set to compete in a new FIFA video game league in 2018.
 

The e-League will see two players represent each A-League side in the much-loved football game, with each club playing each other once before a tournament-style final event. It will run alongside the last nine rounds of the A-League season, beginning on February 1.

Esports, or competitive video gaming, is growing massively both around the world and in Australia.

Two AFL clubs have purchased esports teams while internationally many major clubs including Manchester City, West Ham, Valencia, Sporting Lisbon and Wolfsburg have FIFA players representing them.

The FFA is currently finalising major sponsorships and broadcast arrangements for the e-League. Most gaming competitions are streamed online on services such as Twitch.

“EA SPORTS FIFA is the most popular sports video game in the world, with a huge following in this country including a broad base of participants who play many sports,” FFA CEO David Gallop said.

“This is an advantage that football has over other major sports in Australia and we will make the most of it.”

Players can register their interest in playing in the e-League on the A-League website. For each club one player will be directly selected and another will be drafted from a pool of eligible players, based on a combination of factors including their FIFA Ultimate Team rankings.

Potential competitors must be available between January 17 and April 22 of next year.
